She broke a lot of firsts for women and African-Americans in the U.S. so this first political pick had to be about Shirley Chisholm!
I actually have her quote right on my home page because I find it really motivating as a female working in the political field; “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair”. That was just the kind of attitude that Shirley Chisholm portrayed in her career.
The politician, educator and author was the very first African-American congresswoman in 1968. She then went on to be the very first black candidate to run for the U.S. presidency for a major-party (Democrats). While running for president, Chisolm survived not one…not two…but THREE assassination attempts in the duration of her campaign.
Chisholm passed away in 2005, but her legacy for changing up the system should be remembered for centuries to come.
